Here's a naming convention guide when creating file and folder in your local or shared drive:
- A filename can be up to 255 characters long and can contain letters, numbers and underscores
- File names should be descriptive, meaningful and short as possible
- Avoid using these characters when you are naming files or folders:
/ \ " ' * ; - ? [ ] ( ) ~ ! $ { } < > # @ & |
- Folders follow the same naming conventions as files
- Use period to separate the base file name from the extension in the name of a file (example: Budget2000.xlsx).
- Avoid using period marks in folders such as P:\January.2023
- Avoid unnecessary repetition of information in your file path structure. Redundant detail only increases the length of names and file paths. The maximum length for a file path is 259 characters.
- You will encounter the following message when the file path is more than 259 characters. Suggest to copy the file from your shared drive to your desktop and rename it before copying it back to your shared drive. If the issue persists, please send an email to [email protected]
