How to change your default Multi-Factor Authentication option
This is the procedure on how to change your default MFA sign-in method. Please read the critical notes at the end of this article.
- Navigate to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info and sign in with your <username>@local.competenz.org.nz credentials.
- As MFA is already enabled on your accountyou’ll be prompted to either TEXT or CALL the one-time pin to access your account.
- Enter the code once you receive them and click “Verfiy”
- You can then click on the “Change” link on the top of the page.
- On the "Change default method" screen, select the option to be set as your default from the drop-down list. Then click "Confirm."
NOTE: A few things to consider in selecting your default sign-in method.

Phone – Call or Phone – Text Mobile Number
- You need to consider your mobile coverage e.g. if you’re overseas or in an area that has poor reception.
For users who uses the older IPHONE 6/6s, you may need to select this option as the Microsoft Authenticator app requires the newer version of IOS to work. Minimum IOS 13.0

Microsoft Authenticator – Notification
- You need internet connection on your phone via WIFI or mobile data. This is the easiest method as you’ll only be prompted on your phone and just need to “Approve” the sign-in request.

- You need to provide the 6 digit code from your Microsoft Authenticator app from your phone.
